The club was founded in 1953 as an army ice hockey team under the name Rudá hvězda Brno ("Red Star"). The majority of players were transferred from two hockey clubs in Brno: TJ Spartak Brno Zbrojovka and TJ Spartak GZ Královo Pole. In 1962, the club changed its name to ZKL Brno, reflecting its association with the "Ball Bearing Factory," and ceased its affiliation with the army. This period marked the beginning of a dominant era for the team.
Between 1955 and 1966, HC Kometa Brno secured 11 Czechoslovak league championship titles, establishing itself as a powerhouse in national ice hockey. The team's success was further highlighted by winning three consecutive European Cup titles from 1966 to 1968, making it the most successful Czech club in international ice hockey during that era.
Challenges and Relegation (1990s–2000s)
In the 1990s, the club underwent several name changes, reflecting shifts in sponsorship and ownership. In 1990, it became HC Zetor Brno, then HC Královopolská Brno in 1993, and finally adopted the name HC Kometa Brno in 1994. In 1996, HC Kometa Brno was relegated from the Czech Extraliga to the 1st Czech Republic Hockey League, the second tier of Czech ice hockey. Financial difficulties and frequent changes in ownership plagued the club, leading to another relegation in the 2001–2002 season to the third tier. The team's future appeared uncertain during this tumultuous period.
Resurgence and Return to the Extraliga (2000s–2010s)
Determined to reclaim its former glory, HC Kometa Brno began a steady resurgence. By the 2003–2004 season, the team had returned to the 1st Czech Republic Hockey League. A pivotal moment came on April 1, 2009, when HC Kometa Brno purchased the Extraliga license from HC Znojemští Orli, facilitating their return to the top tier of Czech ice hockey after a 13-year absence. This strategic move laid the foundation for future successes.
Recent Achievements and Continued Excellence (2010s–2020s)
Upon their return to the Extraliga, HC Kometa Brno quickly reestablished itself as a formidable competitor. In the 2011–2012 season, the team advanced to the playoff finals but fell to HC Pardubice in six games. Building on this experience, they clinched back-to-back Czech Extraliga championships in the 2016–2017 and 2017–2018 seasons, bringing their total number of national titles to 13.
As of the 2024–2025 season, HC Kometa Brno continues to be a prominent force in Czech ice hockey. The team plays its home games at the Winning Group Arena in Brno, which has a capacity of 7,700 spectators.
